The best rainforest hikes are in the Pitons du Carbet area (from the road N3).
Since the day was rainy, we chose a short hike...
...through the dense and opulent vegetation.
The first leg of the hike was more rugged as we had to cross two creeks.
The first formed a little waterfall along the trail...
...and as it was fairly small, there was no problem crossing it.
The second creek was much wider...
...and I was glad that my primary hiking boots were flip flops...
After crossing both creeks, we reconnected with the main trail...
...that was fairly developed...
...and much less adventurous.
But there were some information tables on this part...
...so we learned a bit about rainforest...
...and soon were back on the paved road, looking down on the main creek.
Every morning - on our way to breakfast - we saw mysterious hills on the horizon.
So one day we decided to climb them.
The largest was called Morne Larcher and was 477 meters high.
It towers above the small village of Le Diamant.
This is the view from the pier in the village.
After the village, we parked our car and took a narrow street toward the mountain.
(after the road turns south, look for a sign to Morne Larcher)
I was hoping for switchbacks, but the trail went straight up...
...and was quite rocky at that.
As the rocks got quite large...
...I was sweating more than Mother Earth.
At around 400 meters there is a viewing point from where you can...
...either continue the main trail and descend on the other side of the mountain...
...or take much smaller trail...
...and take a side trip to the wilderness.
However, this small trail soon vanished...
...and since it started drizzling, we decided to go back.
When we reached the car, the sun was shining again...
...so we drove around to see the other side of the mountain.
