Costa Maya is but a narrow pier jutting from a small
touristy center surrounded by mostly undeveloped wilderness.
Pier is frequented by monkeys perching on pirates.
We boarded the bus and headed out of the enclosed zone.
In about 30 minutes after leaving the ship, we were in Mexico proper...
...which meant occasional military presence...
...and soon arrived at a little hut...
...which was the entrance to the mayan ruins.
Just behind the hut we ran into the first pyramid...
...and then continued through a lush tropical forest...
...to a little staircase.
That lead us to a little plateau...
...and trough the trees we could spot more pyramids.
Here is one of them...
...and this is another one (apparently the same blue print).
Here is the detail for amateur masons.
From the plateau we could see the minijungle below...
...and we soon delved into it
Not only were there some minor mayan structures in it...
...but also plenty of exotic flora...
...with blooming tress that you usually see in botanical gardens.
After the excursion we took lunch and I went back to the shore village,
despite the ominous weather...
...that drove people out of the beach.
I took a cover in a covered open bar...
and watched the surrounding boutiques.
After the storm I circled the plaza...
...and walked past a shallow pool...
...back to the main entrace.
