On our last day in Dubai, we took a cab to the city center...
...where there was no shortage of modern buildings.
We found a subway station (in the back) and headed for the financial district.
This is the view of the financial district from the subway station.
The district is a mixture of shiny high-rises...
...and quiet cafes...
...alongside the Sheikh Zayed road.
We got again to within shooting distance of Burj Khalifa again...
...but my favorite photo of it came from the elevated perspective of a subway car.
Then we continued on the subway to the Mall of the Emirates...
...where we took a cab and drove to the Burj Al Arab hotel area...
...another touristy place filled with restaurants and shops.
Burj Al Arab hotel has a shape of a sailboat...
...and is worth seeing from all possible directions.
This is the road leading to it.
From there we walked south through a fairly rich neighborhood.
This is merely a gate to one of the houses. The house itself is behind the wall.
After about two miles we came to a public beach...
...and headed back alongside the same road.
On the other side of Burj Al Arab, we found the Jumaira Hotel...
...with some locale specific decorations...
...and another public beach...
...from which we saw the other side of Burj Al Arab.
Our trip ended back at the Mall of the Emirates...
...which features an indoor ski slope.
...located in its Food Court.
Who would have thought that you can ski in a middle of the desert.
Behold the power of crude oil.
